Promises Etched in Water

Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe

 

I've got high connections in Hell,

I'm going to be treated quite well,

That's what she told me,

After she sold me,

Before I knew my soul was for sale!

 

She said,

"Follow me down, my love,

You'll never be happy above."

So down we went

Without my consent,

As her father gave me a shove!

 

Quoth the Father,

"WELCOME TO HELL, MY SON,

I'M SO PLEASED WITH WHAT YOU'VE DONE,

YOU'VE MADE LOVE TO MY CHILD

AND HAVE BEEN BEGUILED,

AND NOW YOU ARE THE CHOSEN ONE!"

 

Now I've married the devil's daughter,

And I'm quite delighted I've got her,

Her love eternally,

That she promised me,

Though her promises are etched in water!

 

But I'm entranced by her evil, cold stare,

And her long, straight, raven-black hair,

Still,

I can't deny

Her wicked lie,

She's my love, yet my endless nightmare.

 

But a beggar can't be a chooser,

And I just can't afford to lose her,

Can't you see?

She's an angel to me...

Or, is it...

I'll burn if I ever refuse her!

 

'Tis indeed the latter

Being the truth of the matter.
